Why Is Church So Long?

Church Practices

Why does church seem so long sometimes? (Please insert jokes here, ha ha) This lesson will teach us that church is more than just sitting in a lesson, or class until lunch time.

A church service has many facets to it. There are opportunities to fellowship and connect with others, worship and praise God, learn and grow in our walk with the Lord. Each part of church is designed to help us get to know God and other people better.

Psalm 100:1-3
This passage shows us the attitude we should have when we come into God’s house. We need to have a sense of worship. Worship gives us a chance to praise our Lord God and thank Him for all that He has done for us. During worship we put our focus on God and not on ourselves. It gives us the structure we sometimes need to humble ourselves before the creator of the universe and prepares our hearts for the teaching of His word.

2 Corinthians 9:7
Here we find that we are called to give cheerfully whatever the Lord leads us to give in our hearts. What do you have to give? Time, money, things, or service. Do you give these things; do you give them with a cheerful heart?

1 Timothy 4:13
The teaching of the Word is one of the most important aspects of church. Paul encourages Timothy, and us, that we are to give attention to reading, to exhortation, and to doctrine. If we don’t study the Word, we will never know if the one teaching us is leading us in truth, or astray. It is good to follow along with what your pastor is teaching.

Luke 22:19-20
Communion. Our Lord Jesus Christ left us the sacrament of communion in order to give us a tangible way to remember what He did for us on the cross. We can read in Acts that the early church frequently took part in this practice. We honor our Lord Jesus Christ with communion and our remembrance of His sacrifice.

1 Timothy 2:8
Paul tells us that the men are to pray everywhere while in God’s house. Prayer is a great way for us to communicate with God, and should be a regular part of your church service.

An hour or two of a young person’s life may seem like eternity; perhaps for some adults also. Just think how many texts could be sent in that time!!! When put into perspective, the elements of a church service can help us grow in our relationships with others and more importantly, our relationship with God.
