The purpose of the church
What are we supposed to do at church? What a terrific question. What do we see others do at church? I’m not just referring to people sitting in seats while the pastor is teaching; I’m speaking about all the different activities people are involved in. Fellowship? Prayer Time? Does your church have a cafe? Sound teams? Media Teams? Worship teams or choirs? Children’s Ministries? Nursery? What about those that help serve food at church lunch? What about those that help clean up?
We are focusing on serving in this lesson. God has given each of us gifts so we can serve God, the Church, and others.
How does your church compare to the early church? Does this church describe similar attributes of your church, or does your church need improvements in some areas? They prayed together, shared meals, and listened to teaching. They helped one another financially, cared for one another personally, and encouraged one another.
Matthew 22:37-40; 28:18-20
We are to love God, before all else, with all of our heart, soul, and mind. We are to love our neighbor as ourselves. Who is our neighbor? Well, to keep it simple, it is everyone that is part of the human race. We are to treat and love all people with the same love and compassion that God shows to us. The best way to do this is by sharing what Jesus has done for us. As disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, we are to reach our world.
How could we better use our time at church to grow in love and understanding of God and to share the good news, the Gospel.
Powerful message from Paul.
First he considers it a privilege, given by God, to use his time in church to share God’s plan. Second, he states that God’s plan for the Church is to show God’s wisdom to all authorities. What a privilege we have to serve God within the body of Christ.
Spiritual gifts are given for the building of the body of Christ, the Church. Romans 12:6-12 exhorts us to use our gifts to the MAX!!! Not all gifts are listed in these passages; God in His infinite wisdom and power is able to uniquely enable us for His purpose. It is of the utmost importance to be a part of the Church, body of Christ, to exercise your gifts.
People of all ages and backgrounds can contribute to the body of Christ.
Use your special gifts that God has blessed you with to help build up the Church.
Do you ever feel like you don’t fit in at church?
Get plugged in and serve God with whatever gift you have, and watch how God will work in your life.
