We do not fight against flesh and blood. We often forget that when there is so much hate and anger around us. What happens in the spiritual realm affects what is happening in our lives and in the world around us. There is a real war that has been going on since the beginning of creation. It is important to learn about our enemy so we know how to better fight this battle.
Satan is real and powerful (1 Peter 5:8). He’s not a sleeping lion. He is a fallen angel – a created being. He poses as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:4). He tries to appear righteous in order to deceive us. We see all around us that things that are evil are now being called good. Satan hates the Lord Jesus Christ (Revelation 12:1-9). He is an accuser of God’s people (Revelation 12:10). In almost every superhero story, the villain attacks the hero’s family. This is a reflection of what is actually happening. Satan ultimately attacks God’s people because he hates God. Satan is working very hard. He attacks individuals which snowballs on and on until everyone has been affected by it. But when we understand how the enemy works, we are able to forgive easier. We can also see the enemy at work when seeds are planted that never take root (Mark 4:15). Even when we are faithful to share the love of Christ, often times the enemy snatches that seed. He also blinds the eyes of unbelievers (2 Corinthians 4:4). Satan is a liar and a cunning tempter (John 8:44, Genesis 3:1). We also see through Scripture that satan is limited in what he can actually do to harm us (Job 1:12).
All of this noted, the most important thing to know about the enemy is that he has already been defeated (Colossians 2:15). The battle is real, but we fight FROM victory, not for it. The victory is already ours through the blood of Jesus Christ. Therefore, when we go into a battle, we understand that we have been given all authority over the enemy. WE WIN!
