If He went too early or too late it wouldn’t be the Father’s will, but Jesus always pleased the Father, so His movements were in sync with what the Father desired! So He remained behind, walking carefully in order to fulfill the Father’s will! Now a fair question is why is He going up now when He told His brothers earlier that He wasn’t going up? Did Jesus lie to His brothers? No way!! He only said, “I’m not going up with you all right now.” As they were trying to goad Him into going because they didn’t really believe in Him. Had He gone with His brothers undoubtedly they’d made a big ol’ mess of things, purposefully drawing attention to Him but not in a good or Godly way. I’m reminded of the demon possessed girl that followed Paul and Silas around drawing attention to them but not in a good way or for a Godly purpose. Hers was for money (Acts 16:16-18)! Instead of relenting, Jesus waited on the Father and after they left the Father said, “Ok, now it’s time to go up. However, I want you to stay hidden, so go up in secret.” If we pay attention here, we can learn something that will be a huge blessing in our lives! And that is how to follow Jesus wisely, circumspectly, and in accordance with His will and not anybody else’s not even your own. Wisely means exercising the power of discerning and judging properly as to what is true or right; Circumspectly means with careful consideration of all circumstances and a desire to avoid mistakes and bad consequences. According to His will means doing what He wants at the time He says! When we follow Him wisely we don’t run out blindly looking for a confrontation, a fight, or argument with the enemies of Christ! When we follow circumspectly, we don’t compromise our faith, our character, or our witness by living in or interacting with the world as if we have no faith at all! When we follow obediently we do what Jesus did in following the Father. We don’t do what we want, when we want, how we want we do what Jesus wants in every way! There’s a time, place, and season for everything in life, and if we would listen and wait on Jesus to guide and direct us, we’d be blessed beyond what we can imagine (Ecclesiastes 3:1-13)! Jesus didn’t go because it wasn’t yet time for the “Cross” which is what the brothers could have antagonized in the crowds earlier than what was in the Father’s will. Then the Father said go, but go secretly and stand-by for further instruction. Jesus’ comings and goings were in complete submission according to the Father’s will and not anybody else’s, not even His own! So, we have a huge opportunity. If you want to live life to its fullest, enjoy the fruit of your labors, and be blessed in unimaginable ways, then that’s how you need to live your life too. In complete obedience and submission to the will of Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
Lesson4Life: To truly follow Jesus you must be in submission to His will, not your own!
