Many today believe that salvation is like mixing a paint color at Home Depot. You just need the right formula of works and religion to please God! Does this mean God is unconcerned about our works? Of course not! Faith is not a substitute for works. Faith is the foundation of works that please God! Jesus’s point was not to dissuade works, but to put them in the proper perspective as a demonstration of faith, not a mechanism for earning salvation! You can’t stand and watch a child in the road about to be hit by a car and say, “Well I have faith that Jesus is going to take care of that.” God gave you the ability to see a dangerous situation and He put you in that spot for a moment such as this! Have faith that God put you there in that very instance: to take the child’s hand and pull them to safety! Show that you have faith in God by doing some good works (James 2:18-20 NLT)! We all know the Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme. When we think about this childhood analogy, Humpty was on the wall, but he fell (he sinned). Everything that everyone tried didn’t work to fix Humpty. That’s just like us. From the moment we sin, we can’t ever be perfect again and there is nothing we can do to fix that. Salvation can’t be earned, it must be given, according to Christ’s righteousness not ours (Ephesians 2:8-10). We can’t earn it, because if we could, we’d brag about it and that would be a sin! Jesus demands that people acknowledge their sinfulness and inability to save themselves and recognized the only thing they can do is nothing, but trust in Him (Romans 10:9-10). Try as you might, there are not enough good things you can do to keep up with the bad. You’re going down in your works! This is what Jesus says in verse 29: If you want to do the work of God, You don’t DO, you TRUST!  You believe in Him!

Lesson4Life: God’s work begins by trusting Jesus, the One God sent to save you!
