As we close out chapter 5, we learn how we can continually love others by ensuring we have the kind of love in us that equips us to love others FOR REAL! In verse 41, when Jesus says, “You do not have the love of God in you”, he’s not talking about love FROM God; He’s talking about love FOR God! He makes this deduction not only as Lord Jesus, already knowing the heart of man (Jeremiah 17:9-10), but also by observation watching how they exalted themselves above others (Luke 18:9-14). They exalted and praised one another for their self-righteousness, making a public display of piousness in the law, but then condemned and crushed those they deemed unable to keep it. Here’s the catch: it’s easy to superficially love people who honor or treat you the way you want or expect to be treated, but what happens when they don’t? What happens when they make you mad or offend you in some perceived way and your pride, ego, or self-esteem gets bruised? Only then do you get an opportunity to see if your love for God is greater than your love for yourself or for the people who honor you (Galatians 5:13-26). The leaders may have thought Jesus was upset because they didn’t endorse and honor Him like they did the other prominent leaders, but Jesus says, “I’m not looking for men to honor me in the way you desire honor. I want you to have a true love for God and each other, but you don’t!” Jesus can help us fulfill the only requirement of the new covenant of Grace: TO LOVE (1 John 3:18-23)! And, just in case you’re wondering how much importance Jesus places on love, read 1 Corinthians 13:13.
Lesson4Life: True Godly love builds relationships; superficial selfish love destroys them!
