There is a people group that hates God. They have chosen to be their own god. They embrace all that the world has to offer and neglect God. The embrace every pleasure and lust that they have, giving no thought to a greater being than themselves. As Christians, however, we are set apart from the World. Though we live in this world on a physical level, our spirits should not be engaged with the world because we have been transformed (Romans 12:1-2).
We have been chosen by God to serve Him and His purposes. Because of this, we must live like it. We must be careful of the temptation to love the world more than we love God. Not everything the world offers is bad, but it can quickly become an idol (1 John 2:15-17). Because we are so set apart, the world hates us, just as it hates Jesus. The world hates Jesus because they don’t know Him and because He exposes their sin. Once their sin has been exposed, there is no excuse for them to continue on in sin. They can no longer remain “blissfully ignorant.” They allow the deceptive pleasure of sin to blind them and harden their hearts (Ephesians 4:18-19). All this being said, it does not mean that we are to live so segregated from the world that no one ever reaches the lost. We are to bear witness of who God is. Though the world may hate us, we cannot allow that to let fear settle in and keep us from sharing His love and goodness with it. Jesus ensured us that we would not have to do it alone, but that He would send us a comforter, a helper, to empower us to do His work (John 15:26-27).
