The Gentiles were not concerned with the danger of being associated with Jesus, the damage to their reputation, the social cost, or even the threat of physical danger. “Sir, we wish to see Jesus!” The original text suggests they kept asking! They were not put off by fear, embarrassment, or any other reason. They were drawn to Him and wanted to know Him!
That’s what Jesus does with people who don’t know Him. He draws them to Himself just like He is drawing you right now if you don’t know Him as Lord and Savior (John 6:43-46)! You are part of all and you’re being taught right now, and if you’re one of the everyone who listens and learns, then you’re being drawn to come to Jesus! Why? Because He wants to save you and give you a hope and a future (2 Peter 3:9). Why? Because He loves you and has awesome plans for your life if you will trust in Him (Jeremiah 29:11)! At this point, one who doesn’t know Jesus should be saying, “Sir, I want to see Jesus!”
How Andrew responds to the request of the Gentiles is a model for believers! Andrew didn’t say, “Well, let’s have them fill out the membership application, attend a class, and have a panel interview with the 12 of us before they can meet Jesus!” Andrew said, “Come on Philip. Let’s take the request directly to Jesus and see what He wants to do with those who are seeking to meet Him!” Andrew got himself and Philip out of the way so they were not a barrier between the Gentiles and Jesus!
Believers, don’t goof around trying to teach seekers the “rules” of Christianity when they don’t even know Christ as Lord yet because all they’re going to do is make you mad! The most important thing is not getting them to stop cussing, drinking, lying, cheating, stealing, and sinning. The most pressing need for them is to see and know Jesus as their Lord and Savior before any of that other stuff! Sure, people will come to you with questions about your hope in Jesus, why you believe, what salvation is about, and other questions about faith. Have your witness ready (1 Peter 3:15-16)! Then get out of the way when Jesus draws people to Himself! Because Jesus Himself said I’M the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no one comes to the Father except through Me!
