Lazarus’s historical account is a wonderful illustration of what happens when lost sinner put their hope and trust in Jesus Christ to save them (John 5:24-29)! Lazarus was dead in the tomb and his body decaying. Those without Jesus are spiritually dead and decaying. Some are more decayed (sinful) than others, but still dead nonetheless (Ephesians 2:1-3)! But Lazarus believed in Jesus and was given a new life and lifted out of sin and death! Likewise, all who believe and trust in Jesus have been given a new life and are lifted out of the same graveyard of sin and death that Lazarus was in (Ephesians 2:4-6)! And when Lazarus was brought up out of the grave, the old grave clothes binding him were cut away so he could move about freely! When that lost sinner puts their faith in Jesus, is saved, and given a new life, the old grave clothes holding us back are cut away and the new person can move freely in Christ (Colossians 3:5-11)! Just as Lazarus was raised from the dead by the power of God, so too are those who trust in Jesus as their Lord and Savior! That’s what Jesus does. He raises people up! Same as with His past miracles, the people were divided. Many of those listening and watching believed while others went away unmoved, unconvinced, and unsaved! The hardened Sinner unconvinced is gonna run from Jesus and to their old man-made religion clinging to their spiritually dead and decaying old self-centered body! A broken sinner realizing their need is gonna run to Jesus and leave the broken down religion behind to trade in their old decaying clunker body for a new model! This is where God’s grace and mercy come in because when a heart will yield itself to the truth and believe, then God’s grace will bring salvation and a new life! So, the question for today’s world is the same one Jesus asked when He finished explaining to Martha what was in store for Lazarus…

Lesson4Life: Jesus is calling you out of death to a new life in Him. Do you believe this?
