Generally what comes to mind when we think of the word “build” are things like build-a-bear. We think of building buildings, bridges or cities. The building of a church, however, is much different and requires much more internal work than the hands-on work of building a building. It first requires the work of the Holy Spirit in God’s people and is not something that we can do on our own. When we try to build without the help of the Holy Spirit, it’s not pleasing to the Lord and will eventually be destroyed by Him. One example of this is the tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9). They tried to build something on their own and for their own glory and the Lord destroyed it.
So we see that to build a church it first takes a move of the Holy Spirit followed by the response of open and willing hearts. The building of a church is not a “one-and-done” kind of deal, but an ongoing process. The Lord has built and continues to build our church as we are obedient to His voice and are moved by His Spirit (Ephesians 2:19-22).
Lesson4Life: Together we build much more than we possibly can alone because Jesus is still building us!
